I walked by this pickup truck used by a State of California Food and Agriculture employee who was setting out survey traps for gypsy moths and a nasty type of beetle. I noticed the glass fly traps and a plastic fly trap in the bed of her truck. The glass fly traps were made in Mexico. We had a nice chit chat and she told me the state was trying to modernize to plastic fly traps because they were easier to manufacture, are less susceptible to breakage, and cost much less to make. Unfortunately for the state, the flies prefer glass to plastic by a very wide margin, so the state is going back to glass. For flies and insulator collectors, glass is shinier and feels better than plastic any day. |
