Some confusion exists as to what is "Script" embossing, versus the later "Prismic" style of lettering. Script is what you find on SMOOTH BASE ( pre-drip point patent ) HG and Hemingray embossing insulators. The style of lettering was continued after the drip points were added and continued until Prismic lettering was introduced (about 1895). Script lettering is typically not very bold and embossed in a loose, hand script-like way from which it derives its name. It should be noted that there are a number of variations during this period on different CD's, sometime referred to as "Transition" type. Consult your local specialist for references on these ! Shown is an odd, smaller than usual Hemingray No.9 with Script lettering. It seems Hemingray wasn't exactly sure what they wanted the No.9 to look like in the early years. There is a lot of profile variation within the Script grouping. |
