Fontana Dam is also notable in that, breaking from TVA tradition, it has an outgoing 12 kV circuit to feed local customers, including the resort town of Fontana Village. Here the 12 kV circuit comes up from its underground run from the switchyard. There are dual underground circuits for redundancy (the front circuit is closed, the back-side circuit is open). Even though the generator voltage is the same as this circuit, the line is fed from a transformer on the 161 kV bus, to help prevent lightning from running in on the generator leads. |
