Spaced out fairly evenly on both sides of the tunnel were these arched recesses. Aproximately 6 feet tall and 2 feet deep. These were designed into the tunnel wall just in case someone got caught in the tunnel when a train came thru, they could get up in one of these to avoid being hit.
