This picture shows two trolley poles on the Third Avenue Railway System's "A" route in Mount Vernon, New York. Somehow this pair (the poles with the banners) managed to escape removal after the last trolley ran in 1950. Although difficult to see, the span wire which once supported the trolley wires over the two tracks is still in place, with Ohio Brass wooden strain insulators at each end (very close to the tops of the poles). I took this picture in July 2004. Unfortunately, by September, these poles had been taken down and cut apart. I was able to examine the remains of one of the insulators, which was destroyed when the poles came down and were piled by the sidewalk. The metal cap was marked with the Ohio Brass logo. Wish I could have saved it.
