N.B.

  • CD 160 ARMSTRONG [010] mold set was made in 1949.[1]
  • CD 160 HEMINGRAY [100] mold set was made in 1934. Large lettering.[2]
  • CD 160 HEMINGRAY [050] and [130] mold set was made in 1938. Small lettering.[3]
  • CD 160 WHITALL TATUM [020] mold set was made in 4Q 1943. Dots around year indicate the quarter.[4]
  • Years marked with a gray background do not exist. 1960 is an arbitrary date by which all CD 160s had certainly ceased being produced. Armstrong mold drawings for the CD 160 are marked "obsolete" as of 1957.[5]

Footnotes

  1. Andrew Gibson. Only one mold year has been found.
  2. Andrew Gibson. O_4 is the only date marking found.
  3. Andrew Gibson. After discussion with Bob Stahr and Bill Meier at Springfield in 2006(?), it appears that the 1934 mold set was re-worked. The mold dates were blotted out, and re-engraved as 38, and the lettering was reduced in size. The would be the [130] with the blotout. It is unclear whether new molds were made or not, which would be the [050] without the blotout.
  4. Andrew Gibson. 43:: is the only date code found on this style.
  5. Andrew Gibson. Copies of Armstrong blueprints from Richard Wentzel show the mold for the CD 160, and they have a hand written "Obsolete 9/19/57" across one corner.
  6. According to this study to date.
  7. According to this study to date.
  8. Whitall Tatum did not use these mold numbers, on any of their insulators, per N.R. Woodward. This mainly refers to the Whitall Tatum insulators manufactured by Armstrong.
  9. Arlen and Gene believe that these are style numbers, not shop numbers. "2" is the only reported number, and other K.C.G.W. styles have different numbers.
