Side shot. Note how the wire from the locking mechanism going up to the top piece is curved to allow the wire to pass straight through the insulator. This is similar to the wire clamp system used on canning jars. The insulator is jet black in color and about 2.75" x 4". Given the paint color and general outline of the insulator, I would place it in the 1870 - 1890 time frame?
