If you are familiar with this scenic portion of coastal Massachusetts, this is looking northeasterly along Nantasket Avenue which extends several miles along a thin stretch of land that extends from one end to the other. On the extreme left of this c.1915 photo is the pointed edge of roofing of the former MDC Police Station (this building still stands). The beach is behind the long-gone structures on the right. Hull Municipal Light Plant's lines and street lights are along the left with telephone and trolley service openwire circuits serving the community upon beefy, tapered square poles along the right. According to former and retired Hull Light employees, these poles were made by local craftsmen who also produced tall wooden masts for ships.

The Hull Light Plant was founded in 1894 and generated all of its own electricity up until 1919 when an incoming double-circuit 7kv or 13kv line from the Weymouth Light and Power Company facilities was constructed along a several-mile long stretch through Hingham, MA. An indoor substation was constructed in 1919 to supplement the town's increasing needs. Next to the Light Plant office, it was within an enclosed building, likely to limit exposure to constant salt and moisture upon the high voltage equipment since the coastline was a few hundred yards away. This building still stands and is inscribed "Erected 1919".

The older line was upgraded by the Weymouth Light and Power Company during the mid-1930s to 23kv with an outdoor substation on Electric Avenue, (now Edgewater Avenue) right next to the Light Plant office. These facilities and remain undisturbed and well-maintained and are and among the town's historical landmarks. Their generation plant stood until some time in the 1950s. The exact year of decommission is not known.
