The spike clearly shows the head has been flattened down from a wheel continually running over it. That wear allowed the 1/4 inch springy coiled flat rail to fly upward and pierce the wood floor boards of the passenger cars. The flat rail was outlawed by the State of Michigan as dangerous in the mid 1830s..
