Mike Spadafora had this working carbon arc lamp. Wow, when that was turned on it was BRIGHT! You had to shield your eyes from it.

It's quite fascinating how it works and auto adjusts itself as the carbons burn down to create a uniform gap between the rods. Too much to explain here. Ask Mike!
