The 2 insulators shown here are from Holland, or more correctly stated, The Netherlands.

They are Copper clad Insulators.

They actually have a thin copper layer or skin over a porcelain insulator. WHY???

What purpose does this thin, very thin copper skin serve? .

It will not serve as protection against projectiles thrown at it.

And how does a thin copper layer serve as additional electrical insulation or protection.?

Do Dutchmen really do it differently? Your answers greatly appreciated.

Answers.

It was suggested by a few collectors that the copper skin was to help diminish Radio Interference,

but, Wim Druijff of Holland wrote to me with the purpose of the copper skin over the porcelain.

Hello Bob,

As I promiss to you here the story off the insulator with copper outside.

There was the electric company PLEM the had many crossing lines with road en railroad.

Used by the telephone company PTT ( means Post Telegraph and Telephone).

On that crossings where young people the catch stones from the railway en hit the insulators.

To fix that problem the made a experiment whit the copper outside.

By hitting with stones than break the porcelain inside but the outside keep them complete so that it was not necessary to replace every moment new insulators.

The test was in a small area in the soud off Holland and it was not successful so the stopped quickly.
