Here's a display full of commons that I managed to put together over a couple of weekends. I spent about a hundred bucks on the lumber and other supplies. I used 4x4 posts and mounted the pins in 1x4 pressure treated with a 2x2 pressure treated support underneath. I added metal straps on angles to prevent scissoring. The posts are lag-bolted to 4x4's attached to metal fence post supports. I used an oil based wood stain in ebony, but a lighter colour would have been closer to a shade of creosote!

The metal pins came from transpo brackets that had been taken down on a local line. These included the oak cobs as well. The depth of the bolt under the metal pins was sufficient for the 1x4's. I used an 8 inch spacing between cross members. Some of the glass was a tight fit to get over the pins under the cross member above, especially the ponies with lots of dome glass.
