Here is a couple of power distribution poles in service in Scotia, California. Scotia, is a "company town" developed many years ago by the Pacific Lumber Co., a large Redwood lumber mill situated in the heart of the "Redwood Empire" in Humboldt county, on the N. California coast. The company has always generated and distributed it's own electric power using redwood mill waste for fuel. It now has a modern co-generation plant and is tied in with nearby Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

The distribution system, as shown here, is now 'classic' with the 2400 volt delta circuit, long upgraded by most utilities, still in use here. A typical old style GE side bushing transformer dating back to the 1920's, protected by the old style porcelain case "chocolate box" fuse cutouts is still in daily use. The yellow painted crossarms comply with a long standing California electrical code requiring them to be painted yellow or bear a High Voltage sign. The mill chose to stick with the yellow paint, long out of use by the area major utilities, who use signs instead. For another shot of 'classic power" Click NEXT
