... This photo was likely taken in 1907 when the second line was under construction. the first line had alredy been completed and was energized at this time. This picture most likely taken on the main 60 kV line from near Niagara Falls to Lockport N.Y. The insulator and cemented in cast iron tripod pin being hoisted up the tower together weigh near 80 pounds ! Note that three guys are needed to get it up on to the tower! For an up close view of this classic insulator [id=232334898] the tripod towers in this photograph were designed by the Archabald Brady Co and were built with legs made of gas pipe filled with concrete. numerous towers of this design are still standing today with tops modified to carry three strings of suspension insulators.
