Good day to all in ICONland!

Now that I am finally finished my first year of university, and the stress of final exams is slowly fading away, I can relax a bit before finding a summer job. I figured I'd take the time to clear a few more unappreciated insulators out of the collection, so my mother doesn't send me a letter bomb after I leave her house next year with thousands of them still covering every surface.

First up on the chopping block is something that isn't an insulator at all. Up for grabs this 'eve is a rather unusual Canadian Line Materials lightening arrestor. The body of the piece is a large glass cylinder, approximately 3 1/2" in diameter, and the cap is an off-white fibreglass-like composite material measuring approximately 4 1/2" across. The glass body has a metal clamp bolted into place - useful for attachment to backyard pole displays, or any other sort of display rack. The whole shebang measures about 14" in length.

The fibreglass top has quite a lot of writing on it. I'll do my best to recount it all here; "CANADIAN LINE MATERIALS / TYPE E3 / DISTRIBUTION / LIGHTNING ARRESTER / VALVE TYPE / TORONTO - 13". The glass body has "MADE IN U.S.A." embossed towards the bottom in small font with the characters "D-28" on the side opposite them. On the same side as the D-28, the following letters are acid etched into the glass: "6 KV / CLM 60", where CLM likely stands for Canadian Line Materials once again.

The condition of the piece is good for the harsh life it likely led, right up to being taken down by the linemen who gave it to me. The glass body has only one tiny ping, 1/8" wide, on one side. The fibreglass top has some cracking, visible in the photo of the top, but I believe this is normal for fibreglass-type insulators having been weather for as long as this piece probably has.

I haven't seen many of these around, and even those I have seen have mostly been still in service. I believe this is a fairly old piece, probably sometime around the 1950s or earlier. It is certainly unusual to see glass lightning arrestors, especially in this size! I'm asking $10 U.S. plus shipping for this unusual piece. Feel free to email me for a shipping quote if you are interested. I accept personal cheques from anyone who is a member or ICON, or anyone I have dealt with before.

All the best!
