I spent nearly six hours on this repair today . When found this "one of two known" specimen was missing part of it's rim. I used a piece of another specimen's rim to do the repair. I had to cut the donor rim part with a diamond grinding cut off wheel designed for a dremmel tool then fit the rim part, to the insulator body, epoxy it, and use filler to fill the gaps . I have not painted it yet . Fortunately the donor rim chunk was from another white U-969 of the exact same glaze color and type which made a good match color wise. Unfortunately, as is often the case with porcelain there is allot of variation in clay body thickness which makes a match challenging. Matching glazes for cut and paste repairs on brown specimens is hugely challenging but it can be done. I reserve this type of repair work for only the highest value and rarity specimens as it is very time consuming. [id=195392873] to see this U-969 specimen before it was repaired |
