On the left is a cutout switch that was normally used to disconnet the office equipment from the line, ground the apparatus for protection against lightning, and "cut the line thru" to the next station so service is not interrupted.

On the right is a 6 line switchboard. Telegraph lines connected to the top terminals and the instruments & batteries connected to the left side terminals. At the top is also a grounding strap. Circuits are completed by plugging in brass plugs in the bus bar holes as shown.
