This uniquely-styled insulator consists of two pieces. A black plastic nut-and-bolt arrangement along with rubber grommets fitted in between the two halves where the conductors run through (when tightened together) acclaimed to be one of the first "spacer" or "spreader" insulators manufactured by the Hendrix Wire and Cable Company, located in New Hampshire. This spacer was specially colored in transparent green to blend in with the many trees of historic Hingham, MA. The manager at the time (position held: 1957-81) (the late Clyde H. Curtis) of the Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant (HMLP) told Joe Maurath, Jr. that the Hendrix company was interested in spacer cable and related spacer-insulator development. The earliest Hendrix single and three-phase "spacer" wire deployment began in 1958 and the introductory plastic "separators" were clear. By 1960 upon request by Mr. Curtis in respect to sensitive HMLP ratepayers at "somewhat" extra cost were green spacers for the exclusive use for blending in with the trees that the town was (and still is) abound with.. These spacers were supplied by Hendrix Wire and Cable for the town's 4,160 volt primary lines. Hingham still is known for its many graceful trees. Unfortunately hurricanes of later 1960 and 1985 tore many of them down. A higher distribution (13,800 volts) came about in the later 1980s. All of the green spacers that remained (which were sparse) were removed from service. The very few originals (clear ones, 1958-59) were quite weather cracked. Joe was working for the utility during the primary voltage conversion and was able to retrieve some of these examples, albeit few. These "spacers", "spreaders" or "separators" (or whatever you want to call them!) were a pioneer installation here in a historic New England community whereby the reliability of electrical distribution attempted to make harmony with the wonderful trees of historic Hingham, MA. (from Joe Maurath, Jr.'s notes).
